A silent color film sequence of the Kazmain Shrines, Baghdad, Iraq from 1956. This sequence is from amateur filmmaker John W. Rowe's travelogue of a car rally between Geneva, Switzerland and Bombay, India. This footage was previously mis-identified as being the the Al-Askari Mosque (also known as the Golden Mosque) in Samarra, Iraq. Thanks to viewers for leaving comments and correctly identifying the location.
The film clip is from the Human Studies Film Archives, Smithsonian Institution collection of historical moving images. http://siris-archives.si.edu/ipac20/ipac.jsp?session=N24OE48279300.2241&p...

@therockkkkher It is not about religion or nationalism you moron! It's about what we are as human beings, as civilized creatures in this planet, can't you see that! What we are right now, as a specie and civilization, had its origin somewhere and that "somewhere" is places like Samarra. I am Honduran but it would hurt me to see the destruction of any heritage site anywhere in the world. Your alledged "American pride" and arrogance just make you look extremely ignorant and stupid.

Our government needs to put on more efforts to rebuild this country, this mosque was blown up two years ago and it's still in ruins. Where the hell is our money going?

Amazing footage. Thanks. These are scenes of the Tigris river followed by a view of the first modern bridge in Baghdad (Jisr al-Shuhada', bridge of martyrs) which is also the site of the old bridge of boats. At the end of the bridge are the Asifiyya mosque, the Mustansiriyya school, the Khaffafin teahouse, and Suq al-Sarai, all ancient landmarks of Baghdad, then the Kazimain shrine with golden domes.

The filmmaker identified the footage as "golden mosque" but we recognize that this may be incorrect. Hence, we appreciate the comment and if anyone can provide further information for identifying the footage we will incorporate that into the description.
