More debate at www.debateteamdocumentary.com

This is a deleted scene from the movie that pits the WGLF against a fairly new Mercer team. The Mercer team uses music, poetry, and sincerity in approaching the topic. The WGLF to their credit tone down the jack-assery but still deliver a satirical critique--although one with a more dry and straight delivery.

The WGLF makes short work of Mercer, offering a meta level analysis as to why mere statistics, appeal to emotion, and merely hoping and dreaming of one day becoming a person with power to affect change, is unlikely to ever affect real change. Mercer, to its credit, however, strikes back by pointing out the ultimate futility of the WGLF approach as well. Mercer asks rhetorically, well, if one has no impact in the world, then what reason do we have to live? The WGLF has no answer to that question, which highlights the potential danger of criticism without end: nihilism, narcissism, solipcism.

There is also an open question in this round whether Mercer is praying to god in order to aid in their cause, fighting environmental pollution, or whether they are merely praying to win a debate round. Perhaps it's a little of both. But the rehetorical effectiveness of Mercer's position, that of "SINCERITY," is significantly undermined when they are viewed (rightfully or wrongly), as manipulating the signs and symbols of religion to win a competitive activity. It comes off as a high act of cynicism, especially in a round in which Mercer's most powerful weapon is exposing the dead-end of the WGLF's cynical critique.
