To start running as a beginner, or an experienced runner with dusty running shoes, just get out there and start running! Try running slowly for 5 minutes today, and again the next day. Don't overdo it, just get out there and start. And don't worry about getting the right running shoes, running apparel, running... I run barefoot, and it feels a heck of a lot better for me! All you need is motivation - you can wear whatever you got lying around.

If you have a friend who runs, go out running with them. When you run with someone whose in better shape and more experienced than you, whether that's your running coach, a friend, or folks from the local running club, they'll serve as a model for how to run well, and will keep you motivated to keep going, and not fall too far behind.

Things like increasing your pace and distance are sure to come up later - for now, just focus on getting that momentum going.

  • 2 weeeks to get in running shape before the police test.300 meter run in under 71seconds and 1.5 miles under 17 minutes,im in my upper 30's and the only shape im in is only in sit-ups and push ups,i ran 2 days ago and only did .75 miles in 8 minutes,my shins are killing me,the bone is very tender.after running the .75,ran and walkd for about 45 minutes.i over did it.im very nervous on failing the test and i wanted to find out what shape i was in.plus flat feet do not help.feet were like lead!

    I've just started jogging. I walked n jogged the first few times until I had enough stamina to jog all the way.

  • I disagree about the comment you don't need good running shoes. I got pes anserine bursitis from having crappy shoes. Shoes matter a good bit.
