  • This lecture should be titled: "The butchering of as many foreign languages as possible in 9 minutes." :)

On a serious note, I do love your videos.

  • I´m actually Portuguese and, on a side note, Pedro Damiano was indeed Portuguese but he developed his theories and books about chess in Rome because he had to run away from Portugal due to the Jewish persecution and he wrote the books in Spanish and Italian. So chess in that time didn't actually developed much in Portugal

  • @kingcrusher I'm danish and it's pronounced with clear K sounds at each end and a strong A. Ska-k.

  • "Gioacchino" Greco is pronounced jioakkino ( j as journey).

    Scacchi is pronounced Skakki. ;)

  • The Persian Poet Firdousi, in his historical poem, ‘The Shahnama’, gives an account of the introduction of Shatranj into Persia in the reign of Chosroes I Anushirwan, to whom ambassadors from the sovereign of Hind (India), with a chessboard and men asking him to solve the secrets of the game, if he could or pay tribute. The King asked for seven days grace, during which time the wise men vainly tried to discover the secret.

Finally,King’s minister took the pieces home and discovered the secret.

  • The history of chess appears to begin in Persia and India, where versions of game were played as early as 600 CE. In Persia, the game was known as shantraj, a loaner word from Sanskrit meaning “four divisions of the military,”a reference to the different types of pieces on the board. Shantraj certainly spread to China by 800 AD,and it reached Europe through the Muslim conquest of Persia.

  • your pronunciation of ajedrez and xadrez was hilarious :) it's ah-heh-DRETH, kinda. the portuguese word is shuh-DREHSH. think of "eh" as the e in "meh".

    nice videos! :D

  • Philippe pronunciation ftw!

  • check mate means in arabic "the sheikh is dead" i think

  • the italian wold should be read "skakke" if you use english pronounciation

  • I, too, thought the Indian origins of chess were much older. I think the mutations of the game are interesting. The enhanced queen and bishop are characteristic of European chess whereas many Asian countries developed their own variations of the game. Thanks for the vids.
