Many Kenyans have expressed outrage after much of a batch of food aid known as Unimix, supplied across the country, was found to have been contaminated.

Six months after the cereal blend - a major motivator for attendance at schools where it is also distributed - had been supplied, it was found to be infected.

Normal random tests done by the Kenya Red Cross, which supplied the aid indicated that aid contained the fungus, Aflatoxin, Abbas Gullet, the secretary-general for the organisation, said.

Compounding nutritional problems in the already drought-hit region, the fungus does not immediately make one sick but instead slows the development of children and attacks the liver.

Al Jazeera's Peter Greste reports from Kanzui, in eastern Kenya.
