I would take the 2 daily photos before I left for work or after returning in the evening. At the present time I'm mostly working from home and so I can snap the photos at any time.

I think what you're seeing is the eye bolt which is screwed into the device which slides along the ring. The eye bolt has a thin cord strung through it which I use to center myself. If you look at earlier portions of the video you'll see the eye bolt slide by my chest during every vernal and autumnal equinox.
