Warfare has always fascinated folk, both those who have and those who have not experienced it. So a deluge of war comics appeared during and following World War II, featuring fighting men and sundry war heroes. One of the most popular of these heroes was Sgt. Rock. Long after World War II was over, Sgt. Frank Rock continued to battle Nazis. In fact, the good sergeant didn't go to war until 1959, when he first appeared in the 68th issue of "GI Combat" comics. Rock kept fighting and gaining fans until the comic changed its name in 1977 and he had his own "Sgt. Rock" comics. Editor Robert Kanigher whipped up the stories, and Joe Kubert produced most of the art. Sgt. Rock kept shooting and fighting through 422 issues until 1988 when the comic finally declared a truce. There have been reprints along the way, and a movie is in the works, so it shouldn't surprise you to hear that a new set of comics called "Sgt. Rock: The Lost Battalion" is slated to appear in November of 2008, written and drawn by William Tucci under the Vertigo imprint.

  • I'm glad to see I'm not the only fan. I'm not a comic fan really but this was one that I read as a kid. Still have them too. If they make a movie I can guarantee they'll mess it up...already heard its going to be set in the future in space or something. ...Oh, I see thats been mentioned before.

  • I remember buying his comic when i was a kid

  • Right on ! I am a big fan of the comic book !

  • you may want to check Sgt. Rock history. The comic he appeared in was Our Army at War and he stayed with the title until it was changed to Sgt. Rock. I understand he originally appeared as a Sgt. Rocky. If you remember, GI Combat became the home of Lt. Jeb Stuart and the Haunted Tank.
