In the early 1960s five jazz films were commissioned by a corporate sponsor -- one of which featured the Duke Ellington Orchestra.

This piece is a showcase for Ellington's great early-60s rhythm section: Aaron Bell on double bass and Sam Woodyard on drums.

Personnel:
Ray Nance, Shorty Baker, Cat Anderson, Bill Berry, Ed Mullens (t), Lawrence Brown, Leon Cox, Chuck Connors (tb), Russell Procope, Johnny Hodges (as), Paul Gonsalves (ts), Jimmy Hamilton (cl, ts), Harry Carney (bars), Duke Ellington (p), Aaron Bell (b), Sam Woodyard (d). NYC, Jan 9, 1962.

  • Sam Woodyard was one of Ginger Baker's hero's. He credit's his decision to play double bass drums as well as several of his well known chops to Sam. In that sense Sam Woodyard was indirectly influential to a lot more drummers than they probably realise.

I think he re-emerged later in life as a conga player for Buddy Rich?

  • Sam Woodyard...like Carl Palmer, John Bonham and Ian Paice all wrapped up in one mega jazz combo!

  • of course there aren't any dislikes

  • Sam Woodyard was a master--one of the heroes of the '60s band. What technique! And what a tragedy his career was cut short by substance abuse. Thanks to the ones with foresight enough to capture these golden moments on film!

  • 02:30 the birth of blastbeat!
