What a song. The man is a wonder so many sides to him its amazing. He never got the credit he deserved. To me he was every bit as good as Dylan.

Brilliant as usual

@rrfsee What's with the past tense? Yes, I realize that was posted a year ago, and as of today Tom Paxton is alive and touring. To me. "as good as Dylan" is faint praise for a musical god like Paxton; Tom is in a class with Woody Guthrie, Peet Seager, and very few others.

The reason this song is so applicable today 25 years later is that the US government is so predictably brutal no matter who is in charge of it.
-
@rrfsee The difference is he never sold out to the music "industry."

I first came across him wen he was touring Scotland back in the mid sixties, where he always drew a full house. His unforgettable lyrics, transversing love, joy hope, grief and the atrocities of wars and oppression, are timeless musical gems. His music has stayed with me ever after, and it is not a surprise to me that a new generation rediscovers this great poet and artist.

Tom is one of the all time greats along with Pete Seeger, Woodie Guthrie and Joan Collins. We are privileged to live in their era.

Much better, in my opinion

Great song!
Can anyone help with the lyrics of the first verse?
"And sometimes they take us away
And that's the end of (?????????)
They go where they like in our homes
Their eyes miss nothing of value
And may (?????????) go with you
If you are(?????)"
I think I've got the rest

And that's the end of that.
And may The Virgin go with you
If you've a gun or a knife.
