Ozymandias of Egypt by P B Shelley
My recitation of this great poem.. here is the poem :
I met a traveller from an antique land
Who said: Two vast and trunkless legs of stone
Stand in the desert. Near them on the sand,
Half sunk, a shatter'd visage lies, whose frown
And wrinkled lip and sneer of cold command
Tell that its sculptor well those passions read
Which yet survive; stamp'd on these lifeless things,
The hand that mock'd them and the heart that fed.
And on the pedestal these words appear:
"My name is Ozymandias, king of kings:
Look on my works, ye Mighty, and despair!"
Nothing beside remains: round the decay
Of that colossal wreck, boundless and bare,
The lone and level sands stretch far away.

  • very good recitation. thanks. Could this also be seen as a meditation on impermenance?

  • yes, i think so too .. thanks for sharing your views ! :-)

  • Well, done sir--therein lies the puniness--and the grandeur--of our mysterious fate in this time-bound world...

  • thank you ! i like the expression "misterious fate in this time bound world ".. cheers !:-)

  • A poem about human arrogance i think and the arrogant futility of those who style themselves as kings and conquerers, as Ghandi said they never endure but its still a relevant lesson to us in this day and age (perhaps especially so) One of my favourite poems.

  • i'm glad you could share your thoughts on this poem, and yes i agree about human arrogance and the futility .. but then, we are reviewing things at a totally different time .. who knows what the future generation 4 millenea from today will say about our own generation ?

  • and yet there he stands, for long enough to be remembered. Interesting poem.

  • Nice to hear it read right for once, Well done !

  • @shakarman I agree and as taught by our religions to do good and love one another ,what will be left will be that which is of Gods love and ours.

  • What will be left of it

  • no doubt that grandeur of our mysterious fate is time bound.i think even at this point of time it compels us to contemplate about the horrors of war and present time terrorism.all because of hatred and enemity.these power hungry individuals brainwash the innocents youths and guide them on the path of hatred and destruction.ultimately its the good deeds on the sands of time leave their empeccable marks.

  • Nice.

  • @J0KKI

  • Nicely done. Thanks.

  • Give me chills

  • (cont) and not merely the endeavours of the conqueror.
