Then I presented some films that I thought might be interpreted as insinuations of "yellowface?"..Was "Chinatown" with its incest and corruptions a comment on Chinese society and saving face?..Was "Flower Drum Song" yellowface? In that film you had an all Asian cast that performed western Broadway songs in a western written drama...Then I connected that film to the opening of "Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom" ...What about an anglo-woman singing in Chinese?..Then I talked a bit about how film directors "steal" from older films and the nonsense of "intellectual properties" ..Did Spielberg "steal" from "Flower Drum Song"? Or was he paying "homage" and WHY?...Does the money make the difference? Then I talked about "stereotypes" ....And the Lon Chaney "Fu Manchu" bit..What was the "big sword" about? Phallic? ...Was that a derogatory stereotype..OR NOT?..Look what happens to the sword.....Then the most common stereotype, "Kung Fu" and Bruce Lee...but why did he need the characters of Roper (John "anglo" Saxon) and Williams? Then I isolated the mirror scene....Did that imply "narcisssisim"? and "saving face" ...Isn't that what Hollywood all about?...So then I played the scene from "Lady from Shanghai"..Once again a film that alludes to China without having direct connection to China.....Why? What was the writer's implying?....
