Thanks for the tip about Reri Grist. I watched the YouTube video of her duet with the countess and I agree she is a delightful singer. I wasn't too taken with Claire Watson as the Countess, however..oh well.

Mozart is one of the few people for whom superlatives can just barely encompass his expression as an artist. Fortunately we are getting some great performances, such as this one, to help us experience the musical glow.

It's amazing that this production, which at the time didn't really have that many flashy actors (though they became more famous later on), is the best recording I've ever seen

Kudos to Gardiner for not rushing the strings from 4.10-4.45, as so many other conductors do, often spoiling a beautiful moment. Great job!

Such a beautiful statement: brings a tear to my eye! If left with only one choice for top Mozart piece this little scene out of a whole opera would win. Such tender music.

If only we could hear from composers now who could create such beauty. No more of this trying to achieve tonality or that garbage. You know when it is good, you know when it is great, you know when it is sublime. I hear nothing today that comes close. It is as if the composers of today want to inflict pain on us. Thank God that we have the masters and great performances of their work to rely on.

IMHO, this is the finest production - in all aspects, right down to the final rolling of the r on "festeggiar" - available on YouTube. Possibly the best I've ever seen.
