1997 Alina Somova Vaganova 2nd Yr Student Smallest in Class Mariinsky Ballerina

Beginning and end of class.
The final student shown at the end, Elena Vostrotina, turned into an exceptional ballerina, however that short part at the end, shows what an amazing ballerina, Alina was going to become. People love to praise or criticize her exceptional flexibility and ignore the artistry which was already apparent as a 2nd year Vaganova student. Yes, the exercise is simple, but her musicality which has been wrongly criticized, is clearly visible. Her gorgeous arms and hands which are a Somova trademark, were vastly superior to the other girls. Plus, you can see this little girl was born to perform. She dances the little exercise as if it is a major performance with great use of her head. The other girls go through the routine. This is a characteristic that will always make Alina Somova as a special ballerina. She knows how to perform. Why some people refuse to see her great artistry and call her great musicality as unmusical and cannot recognize the most amazing arms and hands of any principal ballerina in the world, is baffling. They can continue to complain and make up false stories about poor turnout and unpointed toes plus other lies, but all they miss is the greatest principal ballerina in the world today, whose acting as expressed in her performing style here, is beyond belief.

Who is the teacher ?

@vamaloveballet The teacher is Olga Vtorushina, who in the 1983 DVD of Kirov Giselle with Galina Mezentseva as Giselle, Vtorushina did the peasant pas de deux with Sergei Vikharev. Vtorushina was a short ballerina and often danced with Mikhail Baryshnikov at Kirov.

isn't it crazy how young they look? one commentor guessed about 7, that's what i would guess too. but 11 and 12? the poor things are so underdeveloped... and before you yell at me, i study ballet in a professional school. so i'm not completely ignorant.

I don't think she is doing the exercises like it is a major performance but it is her naturally expression. But stil she is great!!!

@TheBuggabo I told my dad to guess their age and he guessed 12... :) So they don't seem so young to everyone. To me they don't look so young either. I think it might have something to do with the way their leotards are cut or so. :D
