Ahhhh, yes, actually 7 RR's can be seen regularly on NS's Chicago line. In addition to the ones already listed there is Amtrak of course, as well as CSX's trains to Detroit. I've never seen so much UP power on this line which was quite nice. I enjoy them more than the BNSF's. Of the 93 trains I saw here in 24 hours (yep! 93!) 49 had power other than Norfolk Southern.

Amtrak - 15
BNSF - 13
UP - 9
CP - 8
CN - 3
CSX - 1

So with that said, it was a great day at Porter Junction! I never expected to catch 93 trains. So many symbols were new to me (424, S54, 418, 553, 69V, B01), so many extra symboled freights and intermodals (W4G, W1G, M7V, W2T, I1M, W4E) and even some trains that were lost during the worst of the recession but are now back (31M, 19A, 23Z). It was so exciting! And what a great way to start a vacation.

Train 1.
W2T 7:54am
After the passing of eastbound hotshots 24M and 20E I quick ran to Mcdonalds for a coffee and came back to find this beauty coming at me at speed. An extra CP train heads east with a solid train of military vehicles. Cool sight!

After the W2T passed I settled back in the car for a while and watched the Capitol Limited roll west overtaking a 37M, 553 head east (which I really wish i wouldve filmed!), 23M, and Amtrak 350.

Train 2.
69V 9:29am
This was a symbol I'd never heard so I figured I'd get the camera back out. It turns out to be steel coils heading west with a CN on the point. CN units don't show up on too many trains through here, so I'm kinda curious about this. Where did this train come from and where is it going?

Train 3.
17R 10:12am
33E with more UP power and a B09 passed before CN run-through train from Fon Du Lac, WI 17R roars east with 117 cars. This train routinely has CN power but not always, and usually shows up about this time of day.

Train 4.
I1M 10:31am
In between this train and the 17R was a 34G. Never in all my days spent along the NS Chicago line have I caught an extra section of a regularly scheduled intermodal. So here it is, a monstrous train with 7 UPS vans and 20 JB Hunts. I'm not sure what happened here, why NS had to run this train, because the regular section of 21M had only 39 pigs on it itself, and it usually is a very big train. Oh well it was fun for me!

3 Amtraks and another 31K passed before I started filming again.

Train 5.
26N 11:53am
Todays 26N is led by the usual BNSF power and flies by eastbound at Mineral Springs Road around 60 mph. Only 3 JBH out of 140 containers today.

I took another break and caught Amtrak 365, 17V, 19A, 24W, 33G and 667 before the next train..

Train 6.
14A 1:36pm
This is a Union Pacific run-through train from Proviso to Elkhart and is a good looking train today with 114 cars. at the end of the clip you can see train W4E pulling east out of Burns harbor.

Hope you all enjoy.

God bless!
Tyler

  • Ive been to Chesterton 3 times and its a great spot to see variety. That guy in the trailblazer behind the chamber of commerce is ALWAYS there. Ever talk to him?

  • @eunitskates haha you know I was just there this last weekend and what do you know the guy was there the whole time! Thursday, Friday and Sunday on my way home. Crazy! I may have talked to him before, but not this time. It was too cold lol. I couldn't believe he got out for every train in the freezing weather.

  • 69V i caught here in Michigan,,It comes from Rouge yard in River rouge Michigan. The counterpart is a 68V.that train left Rouge at 1am on the 24th with 286 axles..

  • cool horns

  • Nice video! Please check ou tmy channel, I have some good footage of a trip I took to railfan the NS Chicago Line in Berea, OH.

  • I remember going camping once in the mountains of Alberta and seeing a pair of Union Pacific's on a CP line, going back and forth with trains the entire weekend. Although I am for the most part more of a CN guy. I imagine U.S. rail companies would prefer to loan engines from CP and CN, since they could save like 5%. At least, for now.

  • hey hello from houston texas great video hey if by chance you ever see up y-708 and get a video of it please upload my dad retired on it in 1989 havent seen it since i heard it was last seen on a chi line up your way
