Any ship that sails should have enough lifeboats on each side of the ship for all the crew and passengers. If a ship heels over to one side it is almost impossible to get lifeboats away from the side that is pointing to the sky. So the question is: "Does this ship have enough lifeboats on the port or starboard side to take all the souls on board?"

Lifeboats? No. Inflatable life rafts? Yes. Contrary to popular belief shipbuilders can't fool IMO and the classification societies (in this case DNV), especially when it comes to safety.

There is a major problem with Life Rafts and that is getting into them. When I worked in the Merchant Navy some 35 years ago we were well aware of the problem and that on a ship that only had 300 souls on board. Is one expected to jump in the sea from that monster or are they sort of raft that you get into and then it is dropped into the sea. The latter procedure is dangerous with people that know what they are doing let alone near 6,000 passangers that do not have a clue.

Yeah, getting on the liferafts from the sea can be a challenge, even for the able-bodied. I'll perhaps get a chance to make an excursion to a training facility to try that...

I guess they have those inflatable escape slides at the muster stations, a bit like the ones in airplanes.

I wonder what are the acceptable losses when evacuating a ship of that size, i.e. how long the evacuation is considered successiful...

of course not, and that is not nescassary either. The lifeboats can be lovered if the ship lists to on of the sides. You want twice as much lifeboats as needed OMG that would take at least two more decks of window cabins! lool

For the most part, unless my math is wrong.. the way the lifeboats and stuff are set up, 5 people would ultimately be left behind.. but that's assuming that people wouldn't squeeze in or make room for others.
