See the force of this train! It takes a mile to stop. -When I first got my learner's permit I couldn't wait for the exciting adventures that lay just over the horizon. So I took off on my motorcycle on long road-trips for a month at a time. One of these trips brought me to a beach near Goleta. We hadn't seen a train all day so I thought the trestle was defunct. As I was walking along the trestle-an Amtrack train came barreling from the other blind side of a steep canyon curve at 80 miles an hour. But I was dead center of the trestle. I tried running as fast as I could to get to the other side, but something said "SURVIVE" and I looked around and saw the conductor's face in horror looking right at me! With a second to spare I leaped over the side and grabbed the rail as the train that just had missed me by inches was now whizzing right past my face. I was hanging by my hands from the trestle dangling my legs over a 500 foot drop..... I was a bloody mess on my chest but it still took me a full minute to catch my breath. I had stared death in the eye and won. My friend had witnessed the whole thing from below and he was frozen staring up at that trestle for the rest of the day before we finally got on the bike and headed home. I still get goosebumps when I drive past that spot, I can remember the conductor's face like a photo in my mind. Next to that old trestle is now a vista area that you should visit and see this for yourself-just don't linger on those tracks or attempt to cross that trestle. Years later-I created a program to educate schoolkids about train safety.
