Willem Tanke developed the rolling wrist technique: the wrist rolls over the keyboard in order to produce fluent clusters and suggest micro-tones. In this video, he takes a birdsong by Messiaen as a starting-point for improvisation. He demonstrated this in the Dutch national TV-program Free Sounds, in which he appeared with Mike Garson, on 13 May, 2007. The whole show, including interviews, can be seen on http://video.google.nl/videoplay?docid=-7020072174860652233&hl=nl; improvisations only can be seen on http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pgaw8xFRn98. Willem Tanke's performance of Olivier Messiaen's complete organ works on 8 CD's has been issued by Brilliant Classics in over 40 countries: http://www.willemtanke.com/discography.html

  • @juanmaMCMLXXXII You're quite right, my apologies.

  • @BeFrSc This is not music by Messiaen, it's an improvisation using a bird-song notated by Messiaen.

  • @GJmusique Modern music may be a different language, but don't just dismiss it because you don't understand it!

  • modern music, however harmonically and rhythmically very advanced... I can only say this is musical poverty in it's purest form. A toddler can do this...

  • You have to have heard this type of music a lot to be able to like it, its a good example of modern classical Music, it is very weird.

  • In order to understand the music, you have to listen to a lot of modern era classical music, particularly Messiaen, the composer.

  • 3.09 - hmmm. Indeed!

  • I enjoyed the improvisation, and I know another pianist who utilizes similar technique named Mike Vargas. He refers to it as an amoeba hand. LOL!

  • you are very good, but the song isn't goot, it's very very crazy!!

  • You are very talented but the music in my opinion was not even a little bit beautiful. Could you show the same technique in a more attractive way? I'd like to hear something familar.
