@gtc1961 I saw the same things in videos of current Air Force flight ops compared to the early '80s. Not a scientific sampling but not good to see. And to tell you the truth, some things safety related were quite lax in the early '80s. But now even more so. One video showed aircraft in-flight refueling and nobody is wearing their helmet, mask or blast shield. Back then it would have been a good way to get grounded.
@babyherc1r I did the same thing. I ALWAYS put something very beefy like a hummer or a main mount between me and that wire. That was back in the 80's. In all the video I'm seing now, there seems to be a lot of relaxing of safety on the flight deck.
I believe this is on the USS Nimitz in 1985 or 86; the wire broke inside the AG engine belowdecks, at the end of the recovery rollout. The pilots ejected because they thought the plane was going over the side. It was Arresting Gear engine #2; I ran this engine (after the incident) for two years. This is the first time I've seen a video of this accident.
i used to stand behine the front main mounts on our birds or the nose landing gear so that wire would hit that before me. and i also would watch the wire and the landings
I wouldn't call this a crash. It looks like the arresting wire snapped and they ejected, most likely as ordered
