Beware of contractors that are "wolves in sheep's" clothing. They usually give themselves away with a fake laugh. If they are trying to get money out of you before any work has been done you are being screwed.
This guy we hired not only got money from us before the work started, he wanted more while we waited for winter to pass. Every time this guy made a phone call to someone he was charging us $45 for each call. He even charged us for talking to people we knew personally and consider family. Luckily for us we figured him out before any work started; He would have taken us for a long ride. I had 2 dreams even warning me about him: one he was covered in our cash and another he was taking me for a ride not letting me off.
We wanted our house up to "lock up" phase but he had his own agenda. This guy was so crafty he was wetting his wolf lips thinking about the future trying to find ways of getting paid insisting on getting extra house plans, which I almost got purolated, but he wanted to pick up in person.
He is quite eloquent. It was like doing business with Gene Simons.
Lucky for us absolutely no work has been started. Not so lucky for us we paid $2031.56 for hot air.
Before you hire a contractor or project manager, make sure you get LOTS of REFERENCES! If they make you feel like you are working for them instead of the other way around or ask you to do anything you don't want GET RID OF THEM IMMEDIATELY!!!!!!
If anyone tires to hold you by the balls, knock them out of their hands quickly!
these people have no conscience: www.onemanarmybc.com http://www.omainstallations.com/
Their technique is to work for the General Contractor as superintendent / project manager and use their own company as a middleman to siphon profit out by overcharging for subcontractor work. Jerry Vandermey has been involved in similar schemes in the past. Just Google "Jerry Vandermey mareva injunction". He was having his house siezed because he was ripping off a strata in BC for what was likely leaky condo work.

A company to beware of.....they operate under the name Urban Contracting....or Urban Concepts General Contracting Ltd. The people involved are Jerry Vandermey, Laszlo (Les) Koppany, and Remo Schulz. They ripped off several sub-contractors at a BC Housing project in Newton (Surrey, BC).......and also ripped off the General Contractor for several hundred thousand dollars.

What amazes me about these guys is that there are no other complaints about them that I've discovered. Are people just getting bilked on the stupidity of how they run their business???

I agree...a contractor should NEVER be asking for money up front. If you own your property, they always have collateral to get paid if push comes to shove. A contractor can bill upon completion of agreed-upon phases. You are ALWAYS setting yourself up for ripoff by providing ANY money up front...whether for material OR labour. You should NOT be charged for meetings. This is the contractor's investment in the job. If the contractor can't finance your job properly, DO NOT HIRE THEM!!!

You got lucky. Someone got my mom for $25,000 and we had to higher lawyers. They also put riders in the contracts to try and steal the houses once there done. But its a pain in the ass. Were currently getting burned on a chimney.
