ANCHOR:
And today a typhoon ploughed ashore Chinas southern coast, triggering a large-scale evacuation of more than 100-thousand people. Here's more on the story.

STORY:
Typhoon Hagupit whipped past Hong Kong overnight and barreled along the southeastern provinces of Guangdong and Fujian.

Meteorologists have issued an "urgent red alert" -- the highest-level warning -- as the storm made landfall this morning.

In Guangdong Province tens of thousands of people have been evacuated. The typhoon also hit Hagupit and Guangxi, to the west of Guangdong.

Strong winds caused flash flooding in low-lying areas throughout the region. And more than 50-thousand ships had to be called back to port along the coast.

More torrential rain and heavy flooding are forecast.
