Rose (Heather Graham), an optometrist separated from her husband, has lost her child. Thomas (Dominic Chianese) is an aging painter who is losing his eyesight. And Simon (Victor Rasuk, "Raising Victor Vargas") is a young photographer who yearns to lose the fear that leaves him lurking in silence behind his camera lens, especially around women. What each of the seemingly unconnected characters gains through the trials of loss brings surprise and the mixed blessings of personal awakenings. There's no better setting for this story than Manhattan, where personal troubles often spawn both isolation and unexpected connections between unlikely people. Director De Villa resists the easy clichés of relationships, while recognizing the motives that belie all people for intimacy, recognition and even salvation. His camera is sympathetic to his characters though the story reveals itself in ironic, often shocking turns in the characters' lives. "Adrift in Manhattan" reminds us that change is constant, even a necessity.
