Considered by many to be Gilbert and Sullivans masterpiece, The Yeomen of the Guard is set in the Tower of London during the 16th century. An innocent man, Colonel Fairfax, has been condemned to be executed on Tower Green, and the bluff Beefeater Sergeant Meryll and his wily daughter Phoebe plan his escape, disguising Fairfax as one of the Yeomen warders. However, the discovery of the empty prison cell causes the Lieutenant of the Tower great distress, and he puts the blame on the Head Jailor, Wilfred Shadbolt. A travelling jester, Jack Point , and his beloved travelling companion, Elsie Maynard, bring additional complications and humour to the situation. Love triangles, secret marriages, blackmail and perjured witnesses all contribute to this tale of merriment, suspense and deception, where nothing is quite what it seems.
Thank you, J. J. Clark, for teaching me how to say "yeomen."
