These larval triops were taken as eggs from my desktop Betta tank which houses 1 adult (30 days old) Triops Longicaudatus. They were placed in fresh clean treated water, with the intent to let the water evaporate and have the eggs dried for hatching later.

They hatched the day after I put them in the dryout tank. So, I added some more water and tank detritus for food, and after the second day or so I had about 2 dozen of them swimming around. No egg drying necessary. I've read that a small percentage of eggs can hatch without drying, but it seems the majority of eggs from my single adult were completely viable for it.

  • Do you need sand for triops to lay eggs?

  • @Germinator001 Not at all. As long as the water is kept in good condition and they are well fed, they'll lay eggs. I had larger fish tank gravel in this tank so that the eggs actually sank down into the crevices, where they couldn't be picked up and eaten. I had many of those eggs hatch while in the crevices and the hatchlings would hide in the rocks to avoid being eaten by the adults and other hatchlings.

  • what is that white dot next the triops in 2:53

  • @rayman604 : The spot to the left of the triops was an air bubble on the side of the tank.

  • what was the thing that got sucked up by the triop

  • Thank you for this interesting video.

  • Triops make me think of Spore.

  • They're similar to the regular fairy shrimp, but larger and they have a large armor plate over their head. They're not very different from each other.
