French opera composed by Gluck, 1767. ALCESTE. Act I.
Admetus, husband of Alceste, is mortally ill. She consults the oracle of Apollo and learns that her husband must die unless another offers to take his place. Alceste decides to sacrifice herself and invokes the gods of the underworld to accept her as a willing replacement for Admetus.

richness, highest tones ,timber ,overtones resonance stamina ,clarity ,diction, beaute & musical expression OH mighty creation

  • Gloriously sung-- tempo too slow in A section!

  • Leontyne Price singing this aria from Alceste is for me the definitive version. Her voice is spectacular, with a dark timbre and regal air that can't be compared to any singer today. I'm also very fond of Shirley Verrett and Jessye Norman singing this aria.

  • Thank you so much for posting this!! I have been looking for Ms. Price rendition. Absolutely fabulous!

  • Oh my God and French not so bad!!
