The Schooner Brilliant (a.k.a Christine-Margaret, Logan James, and Thomas Hoyne) was built alongside the Red Lion by Ferd Nimphius in Neshkoro, Wisconsin. Charles Kuralt did a special feature on the construction of the wooden vessels in 1984. Douglas Turnbull and Charles "Jerry" Hodlmair commissioned the schooner Brilliant to be built by Nimphius Boat Works.

  • do you know when this segment was actually done? our boat, ariel is pictured at about 6:30 into the video.

  • @davidminlne My guess would be in the winter of 1984-1985. The Christine-Margaret was launched in the Fall of 1985.

  • I lived and worked on this boat in Key West. She was the most magnificent vessel that I had ever seen. The boat was to be called the Christine-Margaret, after the two woner's wives, but one of the wives died during the building so they decided to Name it "Brilliant." She berthed right behind the Schooner Wharf Bar for a couple of years. She donned a Packer Flag. The owner Charles "Jerry" Hodlmair passed away. The boat was sold. The last I heard, she was in New England running Charters.

  • The history is pretty close. The name 'Christine-Margaret' was actually the name of Doug Turnbull's (boat architect) mother and daughter. The name was changed by Jerry Hodlmair when he purchased Doug's interest in the vessel. Unfortunately, Doug came down with terminal cancer and died shortly after the boat was launched.

  • If anybody wonders what true art is, just take a look at this video......

  • I have a Nimphius boat, an Atkin vixen design. He was a master shipbuilder, and i Kuralt has it exactly right. A wonderful man, wonderful boat, wonderful family

  • She is now called Thomas Hoyne. She is in Portsmouth RI on the hard for May and June getting her spring Buff and puff. She is Owned by Block Island Maritime funding, and is available for Charter/sale. I posted a short video of her sailing earlier this spring. She sails like a dream! You can follow our progress at the Maritime funding facebook page.

  • I am sure your story is the correct one as I assume Jerry was your father?? Those years were a little fuzzy and I guess the facts got a little blurry too.

I really enjoyed Jerry and think of him often.
