OMG do these people really expect to get away with COMPLETELY ignoring the difference between northern liberals and dixiecrats? Guess what happened to those dixiecrats....they became republicans. The "Solid South" did NOT, in the span of ONE election (the 1968 to the 1972) go from the stalwart New Deal voting bloc to the party of Lincoln. All those dixiecrats became southern republicans.

OMG now you're going to smear Palin as a racist? Shades of Nifong.
The Dem strategy on race post 1950 has been exceedingly subtle, but sometimes its racist inner workings are exposed as with the Nifong case. In essence it is a strategy to win elections by manufacturing division.
It accounts for a great deal of why progress towards the dream of MLK has been so halting in spite of the wishes of the vast majority of Americans to 'make it so.'

agreed. they didn;t reject them becuase of votes

but you assume that liberal is equal to democrat.

I didnt read his book, but Bartlett might be getting it wrong here. Yes, there were very racist Southern Democrats after reconstruction and on through the 50s. But it was the Republicans who sought to win back the South for their party by inciting animosity towards blacks and tried to give whites a feeling of American-ness that only they should be entitled to. They started that strategy pretty blatantly in opposition to civil rights and continue more subtly today (Palin's "real America" etc).
-
So, the Republican answer to accusations of racism against the blacks is to call for more racism against the Spanish. They're such a class act.
-
Because liberals are always democrats?

Dems racist past from 1850-1964. My question is this, if the Democratic party lost white voters especially in the South because liberal Democrats and Republican supported civil rights, then why didn't Republicans like Nixon, Eisenhower, Ford, and Reagan reject racist crossover to their party from white Southerners if they are the real friend of blacks? People fail to realize is that after Reconstruction the Republican left the South and blacks suffered by return of white Democratic power.
