Empress Maria Feodorovna of Russia / Princess Dagmar of Denmark

Maria Feodorovna (26 November 1847 - 13 October 1928), born Princess Marie Sophie Fredrica/Frederikke Dagmar of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glücksburg and later Princess Dagmar of Denmark, was Empress consort of Russia as spouse of Emperor Alexander III. She was the second daughter of King Christian IX of Denmark and Louise of Hesse-Cassel. Among her children was the last Russian monarch, Emperor Nicholas II, whom she outlived by ten years.

@Balela1912 At the moment I am reading a biography of Dagmar called "Little Mother of Russia". This asserts that the main reason for the choice was the the Tsar wanted a marriage which would not seem political. Beleaguered Denmark fitted this need, as there could be no political advantage for Russia. In addition, the beauty and grace of Dagmar's sister Alexandra had become the talk of Europe after her marriage to the Prince of Wales, and this called attention to the rest of her sisters.
