A better demonstration of something I put up yesterday.

I've been working on these flurried finger-rolls recently, so just putting this up for fun. Mike Seeger teaches something similar on one of his instructional tapes, from an Uncle Dave Macon tune. Seems to be a minstrel or classic banjo ornament. You can dissect it up to a point but then you just have to get your fingers to produce.

I must have first heard this tune from Art Rosenbaum, this has a Cajun version mixed in. gCGBD.

  • Fantastic video. Given the (to me) complexity of the piece, it would be even better slowed right down. And you get a tremendous sound out of those Nylgut strings.

  • @jwoodman Thanks. There's a speed under which it can be hard to get the fingers to perform! Though I can usually train them to, it takes a while. But I wanted to show that fast little roll. What we did on an instructional DVD I have coming out shortly was slow the footage down by half, seems to work quite well as you can really see what's going on. I don't have the software here at home for that though...

  • nice video as always!

What kind of strings are you using here?

  • @guttfunk Thanks! They're classic gauge Nylgut, tuned to gCGBD.
