The Goebbelses were monstrous! What mother would kill her own children? What father would not do everything possible to move his family to safety?

Those poor children, completely innocent with a life of their own before them!

I mean that as a result of 12 yrs of Nazi propaganda, people could not see that this regime was a gonner. I remember a woman in Berlin saying she and her mother had listened to one of Goebbels' last speeches--he said that victory was assured. The woman's mother gave a sigh of relief. "Thank God" she said. Her daughter caught her--"You don't believe him, do you?" The Mother said, "But, Goebbels wouldn't lie to us now." Germans were lied to upto the last second of the Reich's existence.

In 1956, I met a young man who had been a child soldier in Berlin. The day before Hitler's suicide, he had been awarded the Iron Cross. There was a little parade. When the next day news came that Hitler was dead, he was shocked. He had no idea that the war was lost. He was totally brained-washed.
