In a well-planned undercover operation, a team of Virunga National Park rangers in the Democratic Republic of Congo, lead by ranger Christian Shamavu, recovered a poached baby Grauer's gorilla by posing as buyers for the infant gorilla and arresting three poachers. The small team of five rangers found the baby through a tip from a contact in the Lubero territory and the town of Kayna. It is unknown what forest the gorilla came from.

  • OriginalPinkbird: yes, it's assumed that the mother was killed. They are very protective of their babies. Very unlikely that a baby could be taken while the mother is not looking, or that the mother wouldn't fight to save it (or the Silverback whose job it is to protect his family), and no human could run faster than a gorilla mother after her child.

  • I hope these brave Rangers know how many people around the world are thankful for their work. Ranger Shamavus seems to be very dedicated as his interactions with the baby gorilla were very sweet.

Is it assumed that if the baby has been poached, the mother gorilla was killed?

  • what a loss to the world, and what a crime, if these amazing animals disappear.
