Made in Brazil - premieres

Escaping all stereotypes of 'samba, favela and Carnaval', the Nieuw Ensemble and Camerata Aberta (Brazil) come together in Concertgebouw to present the most recent and exciting music written in Brazil. The night begins with the program of Camerata Aberta, followed by a video installation and a public talk with the guest composers and artistic directors of the ensembles. The Nieuw Ensemble wrap up the night with an exciting program of five premières, including the winners of the Second Brazilian Composers Competition and new commissions.

In 2009, the Nieuw Ensemble launched a competition for Brazilian composers. The respons was overwhelming: ninety scores, most of them especially written for the ensemble, were sent in from all corners of the gigantic mainland. On the occasion of the Brasil Festival Amsterdam, a second edition of the competition was launched in 2011. The winning works will have their premieres at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, next to three pieces comissioned to outstanding talents of the previous competition. The project is a collaboration with BAMdialogue -- a musical exchange between Brazil and Amsterdam -- of the composer Caio Amon.

Camerata Aberta is a sort of Nieuw Ensemble of Brazil. The musicians engage in 'letting audiences hear the intensity and exuberance of Brazil', says the artistic director Sergio Kafeijan. The ensemble from São Paulo plays not only works by Brazilian composer, but also music by almost forgotten compatriots of the twentieth-century.
