  • BTW: I appreciate the tips. I'm still learning the program myself. I teach with a magnet technology program and we're working on integrating Blender into the curriculum at the 7th and 8th grade. That way our kids will get the benefit of working with it over 2 years. There are 3 of us on the staff learning it. As we create more lessons, we'll keep posting them here. Thanks for all the feedback.

  • I'll try that. Interesting...

  • I'm not sure if you know what I meant, but I looked at it again and it didn't make sense to me. I didn't use array, I duplicated and rotated and lined the edges up. In edit mode, I held shift and right clicked the verticy on the corner edge until all verts highlighted. Then alt M and merge them to the last verticy selected. I'll add another tutorial to the video response that talks about that within the tutorial.

  • I do see what you mean, and it looks like for a smoother model with this, that technique is going to work better. I think the point of the book is more function over form though. It's the array concept it wants to introduce the reader to. However, duplicating and merging edge vertices before extruding the top together is going to seal it up much more nicely.

  • when you were selecting the top you could of just went into the top view pressed b then selected all of the top, it was so much ezer

  • thank you so much, I got stuck in this part of the book. Until I found this video tutorial. I was learning the program by myself until I got stuck with closing the box. Thank you so much for all your help

  • Also, if you want to select as you do in the tutorial, checking "OCBG" makes mistakes unlikely.

  • Since you said you appreciate comments, here is a good way to select the top of the box: First, make sure you are in an isometric view front view (numpad 5 toggles isometric view), then use the box tool (B) to draw around the top of the pillar. As long as the "occlude background geometry" (OCBG) toggle (by the vertex/edge/face buttons) is off, the box tool selects all edges straight through the model, and all the top edges will be selected.

  • The best tutorials on Blender I came across till so far!

Sometimes however, you make it to difficult on yourself(good way for me to learn the whole program though ;)) :

When selecting edges get in top view....zoom in....BOXselect the top edge....turn the view around the cube (holding ctrl + mousewheel)....boxselect the next edge holding shift....turn the view around the cube (holding ctrl + mousewheel)....boxselect the next edge holding shift.... etcetc..Works!!

  • i wish they tought this at my school...:( not fair, by the way you have really good tutorials!

  • u guys are teaching it at 7th and 8th grade?! damn i wish they had that at my school!

  • 2 years? Wow, can't wait to see tutorials then. I've only been working in Blender for a few months, but still think of myself as a beginner. So, when possible, I'll leave a tip or two, but I'm sure and have learn alot from watching your tutorials as well. Also, maybe one day I can get that book you have on Blender or attend one of the 3 day classes Blender offers at their site. :o)
