Concert flute maestro Garry Shannon plays a set of jigs: the first is a composition of Dublin fiddle player Paul O'Shaughnessy, who was one of the team of tutors at the 2008 Meitheal Residential Summer School from 14th to 18th July. Garry is, of course, the co-ordinator of the school. Inaugurated in 2004, the school has been a huge success, attracting participants from all over Ireland and overseas. No doubt there will be huge interest in the 2009 school when details are announced at http://www.tradweek.com.

  • i didnt know steve jobs played the irish flute

True. What a shame that he got so far along without ever being shown how to hold it. Probably won't correct it now. Instead of holding it against his lip with the base of his upper index finger, he's holding it agains his shoulder with his thumb. Needless strain on the neck and thumb, harder to breath, reduced stamina, difficult to look foreward (hopfully he doesn't want to read sheet music). You can say he does just fine; true, but who knows what he could do with correct posture.

  • @OakAged72 There is much in what you say , but for just trad playing in this way he probaby feels its fine for him ....classical teaching and playing in a wider context would benefit from your instructions.. posture/ brathing/reading/ chromatics/ chords/ key shifts / phrasing and so on...but that's a hard sell in trad circles!

  • @TheZuckingFombie omg no way!! thats so cool! ur so luckyy

  • It's funny how he's my french teacher.. :L

  • @theloveboxquartet Right, I'm stupid because I have an opinion, and because another great contorted player exists. Imagine how stupid I'd be if someone held a flute with their elbows or feet!

I'm sorry you're offended by the notion that he can play for as long as he wants. In any case you've overestimated my interest in your opinion of a Youtube comment I posted a year ago.

  • @OakAged72 And you obviously over-estimate your own intelligence. One of the foremost exponents of the Irish flute would be Michael McGoldrick, who has an even more ''Quasimodo-like' way of holding the flute.

There is no such thing as 'proper grip'

The comment 'and can play long enough for his own purposes' is just offensive.

  • does anybody know the name of the last tune?

  • way to record shitty audio clownholes.

  • i can play this on classic flute

  • watch?v=kfa9yGhweqY who clicks will not regret it guaranteed

  • @Jayfire3103 You can't play from the heart, it has no function beyond pumping blood.
