Officials from the state of Iowa and the Sigourney School District were on hand Thursday, Jan. 24, 2008, as the district welcomed a new hybrid diesel-electric school bus to its fleet. The bus is part of an 11-state trial program to determine if the technology is feasible on a larger scale. GazetteOnline video by Kristina Andino.
@NearAbbeyRoad That's crazy, man! I would think that GM, Ford or Chrysler would be able to build and sell at an economy price, that is until the economy picks up again.

GM have, not 100%, with the Volt - the engine can also propel using complex clutches. Lotus EMAS system, for Proton, uses an efficient specifically designed range extender engine; very efficient at this task. The Volt uses a off-the-shelf GM 1400cc car engine, adapted. A genny engine does not need a heavy flywheel & designed to run constant speeds at its "sweet spot(s)". Car engines are designed for variable speeds. GM could not make a new engine with the money they have?

@NearAbbeyRoad If only we (the USA) would just develop the same technology.

The Chevy Volt is petro/electic technology. As is the new Proton system designed by Lotus. Only electic motors power the car.

I love the hybrid technology. How about applying diesel-electric hybrid technology to cars and light trucks and SUVs?
