Yes, that's the point. Ian Bostridge - another great Peter Quint - was luckier with director Deborah Warner: "What freed me up was the licence Deborah gave me to be myself on stage. I just roamed around in my corduroy jacket, and I think that made it so much more scary."

Both James and Britten devised Quint as a sinister yet seductive charakter. Seductive, not ridiculous! At least Jameson's excellent voice and performance made up for his Punch-and-Judy attire.
