@watchful38 I hate anti-Catholics like this jerk who made this video. Explain this to them if they dont believe in indulgences. In Kings 11(Protestant Bible:Samuel 11) David commits his big sin. In Kings 12:13-15 David CONFESSES his sin to Nathan and God forgives David. BUT, he gets punished by getting his son killed. If David would have died in the state of sin, he would have gone to Hell. But he confessed and was forgiven, but still had to get punished. Indulgences is totally Biblical.
Hey Guys, lighten up! Indulgences are not "for sale" To "sell" indulgences is a serious sin and, in fact, they cannot be sold. If the Catholic Church attaches an indulgence to a prayer or good work, it means that the Church recommends this prayer or work as a way for atoning for sin. The person only profits spiritually by their prayer or work if they love Jesus and are truly sorry for their sins. Religion is a loving friendship with Christ, not a sham! We sin; so atonement is a part of life too!
@NMikeM "claiming that they were authorized by the Pope to sell powerful indulgences for large sums of money."
yes which they used to build alot of church and catherdrals -- how else do you think the catholich church to this day has so much real estate. Even if it wasnt authorised by the pope the pope has no problem using that money to build the catherdals
... decided that they could take advantage of people by claiming that they were authorized by the Pope to sell powerful indulgences for large sums of money.
It's important to recognize, though, that these outrageous fake indulgences were not actually authorized by the Pope, and while this sort of outrageous abuse occured, it wasn't commonplace, and historians now agree that some of the worst stories that were told (most notably those about Johann Tetzel) were made up.
No. But, there are a few factors to consider looking back at the problem with indulgences in the 16th century. First, indulgences developed as a new way of dealing with the penances carried out in the early Christian Church. The Church could not handle enforcing the penances on ever larger groups of people, so they pre prescribed what sorts of acts were equivalent to what what sort of penance.
Occasionally donating to a worthy cause provided an indulgence. A few people then...
No. Actually, there were attempts to curb the abuses going on leading up to Luther, as well.
It's also worth noting that Tetzel has been cleared of the abuses people claimed he committed. Luther was reacting to a problem which was largely mythical. The German people resented that they had lost their hold on the papacy and decided to do a lot of whining about how the Church was supposedly stealing from them. which never bothered them until the Papacy fell back into Italian hands
@badpanda84 It was addressed in the council of trent. Many papal letters and other documents in the vatican way before Martin Luther show the knowledge they had of the abuses in the system. Its kind of like our modern health care situation. We know that there is a problem but we also then have to fix the problem.
Im not trying to prove that Catholics are right and everyone els is wrong. Im trying to inform people like you who have the misconception that the Church was doing nothing for the sale
@bradensmagic and went did the council of trent occur. only after they were expose by Martin Luther. If Martin Luther didnt expose the catholic church they would have continued to get away with that scam
