This fire casts shadows on the wall that they face, and the sounds made be the people moving about behind them, and by other prisoners, are the only sounds they hear. Their reality is very limited. They know nothing of the world that exists behind them or outside the cave. The shackles and the darkness of the cave are symbolic of the ignorance of mankind.

There is a famous allegory that comes to mind during this discourse. It is called the allegory of the Cave. In it, prisoners are trapped in a subterranean cave. They are shackled and facing a wall. Their restraints do not allow them to see anything other than what is right in front of them.
