No they actually don't have identical rights or responsibilities, there are thousands of laws that reference the word marriage and do not apply to civil unions unless the laws in question are amended one at a time to say "marriage and civil unions". As well by keeping marriage and civil unions separate it makes it easier to single out and discriminate against civil unions. If its all just marriage then its all in the same boat and it would apply to everyone equally, its more then just a word.

I'm glad this video has got so many views - Marriage Equality is a great organisation. Until civil marriage is introduced for LGBT people, the 169 rights denied to couples in a civil partnership will continue to affect hundreds of people, even apart from the couples themselves. I really hope same sex marriage is legalised in Ireland soon.
