Here are a couple of BEAM spider bots that I built to give to my dad and uncle for fathers day. The solar cell charges a capacitor to a certain voltage and then triggers a pager motor to jiggle it around a bit. BEAM stands for Biology, Aesthetics, Engineering and Mechanics. Check out Solarbotics.net for more info on BEAM.

  • cool design, but it looks like they just sort of skitter around, like a pager placed on a table. do they have any directional control?

  • Nope. They skitter.

  • YOU WASTED 17 SECONDS OF MY LIFE

  • Really now, who is wasting time here....

  • These little guys consist of a solar engine powered by a small solar panel (the rectangle on their backs). When the engine powers up a capacitor to the right threshold, a small pager vibrator motor is triggered which makes them move.
