One of the most unique festivities of Aruba is the celebration of St. Johns Day on June 24th. Dera Gay, the traditional day to bury the rooster, although before this date different activities will be started. This celebration has its origin amongst the pagan Indians, centuries ago in southern Mexico on the border of Guatemala. It really started as an agricultural rounding of one harvest and the beginning of a new one.The Indians, who live close to nature were extremely afraid of the unknown and of course of the gods. That's why when the harvest was over they would clean the fields and the remains of the harvest were burned. There was no better means of purification than fire but at the same time they would make offerings to the god of fire. Of course they were also thanking the various other gods that were instrumental in helping with the necessary rain and sun. They were also thanking for the bountiful harvest and using the opportunity to ask for more in the coming year. So they had bonfires on the last day of the harvest year and celebrated the new harvest year with festivities. You could not part with the old without celebration and purification. On the eve of this new harvest year, while the fire is leaping high in the air, the men would jump over these bonfires. A lot of betting and challenging would be done with rounds of foods and drinks.
From the Mexican border these festivities found their way south through Central America, Venezuela and Aruba. Aruba adapted, changed and amplified the festivities.
But the Roman Catholic religion changed and influenced many traditions. This celebration being a pagan festivity could not be changed so they adapted it. For more than two centuries St. John's day has been celebrated in Aruba. Ever since agriculture became part of the Aruban daily life, cultural expressions were evident and therefore St. John's day is a part of it too.
