Then it was claimed that he had been sexually molested as a child and these pictures were helping him to come to terms with it - this was confirmed by a psychiatrist. Anyway the whole thing just left his reputation in tatters as you can imagine!

@notleonard He was found to have child pornography on his computer, found guilty and sentenced. Later he was released on appeal - after 3 and a half months. His defence was that the photos were there as he was doing research to play a pedophile. However the person making the programme for which he was doing the research (Paul Whitehouse) said the character was not conceived as a pedophile. There were comments made by the character however that were borderline.

I suspect that the BBC has never released this excellent series on DVD is because the director, Chris Langham fell from grace in 2007 when he was imprisoned for computer child pornography charges. Simon's risky comments suggesting an attraction to "younger men" in this context may just be a bit too close to the mark.
