In memory of the earth-based and gender-equal pagan culture of the Celto-Ligurian tribes in the southern Alpine and Po river valley region called Gallia Cisalpina (Cisalpine Gaul; "Gaul south of the Alps") by the Romans who eventually destroyed their world, took their land, and subjugated them under the Roman Empire.

[Music: 'Wytches Chant' by Inkubus Sukkubus & 'La Serenissima' by Loreena McKennitt]

  • There are two things that irritate me about modern Celtic "Pagans". The overemphasis on women. The Celts were not matriarchal. They were and are an Indo-European society, and therefore patriarchal. They would unite under female leaders, Boudicca being the best known, but male leaders were preferred. That and the exageration of "earth based religion". This was not a religion of primitive earth worship, it had and has numerous non-earth based goddesses and GODS too! Gods like worship too you know.

  • @HoundofOdin Just the fact that a few women, who proved themselves as strong leaders or warriors, were able to attain that status, shows at least something in that area.

  • Yes, it proves that they would unite behind women when they were capable leaders. But as a whole, just by looking at the names of Celtic chieftains, men were far more common as leaders. Some a the more crazy femenists take a few strong female leaders as meaning the Celts were matriarchal. That idea is what I am objecting to. A few female leaders a matriarchy does not make.

  • @HoundofOdin Yes.... modern political "feminism" clearly attempts to turn women into masculine individuals. These few ancient women warriors were probably very feminine... just tough as nails. An entirely different concept.

  • Lombardy, ancient "Insubria" was a Celtic land. Insubres, arising from the culture of Golasecca....

  • Yes, and also the Cenomani were in the east, the Orobii in the central, and I think the Lepontii to the north.

  • @CelticAngloPress

Which makes you wonder whom where the real men (Romans like the Greeks where and are well known for having sex with other men you know?) men whom worshipped there dietys as gods (males figures) or men whom perfered to don there deitys in worship as godesses (Female figures).....

Its only natural, men like that of our Queen mom in Britain, Scotland and England, perfer a Queen over a King, men will naturally fight harder for a leading female figure.

    We still do, Virgin mary.

  • Among the historical Celts no, there was no such thing as feminism because they really didn't care about gender if the leader was capable. Among modern Neo-Pagans who claim to practice "Celtic" religion, yes, it is decidedly feminist. New Age books about "Celtic Paganism" portray the Celts as nature worshiping tribes lead by strong female shamans (something the Celts didn't have) and lead into battle by warrior women (something very rare). This is a fantasy that just needs to die.

  • @HoundofOdin

Theres never been Emphasis on feminism amongest Celts

Its very simple, Women in Celtic society are still and a where equal without question to Men and when in need of extra soldiers would be called onto fight alongside there Men in battled and lead entire female war bands/divisions of there own, some even led men if they had the leadership abilitys/attributes.

The Romans hated us because the only "matriarchal" thing was that we perfer female dietys/gods where they worshipped males
