Gen. Petraeus, nominated by Bush/Cheney, was CONFIRMED by the US Senate last week as the new CENT COM Commander of all US Forces in the Middle East/North Africa/Central Asia. Only two US Senators opposed the nomination. Prior to this nomination, Admiral Fallon was forced to resign, because he disagreed publicly with some US military objectives in that region.
Meanwhile, Pakistan remains divided in an internal power struggle, involving Musharraf, who came to power via a military coup in 1998, and various other interest groups in the country.
The US media is portraying this situation as 'amicable' - when in fact, it is not. Once again, the bidding process will begin, as to who or which faction deserves foreign aid, including military + and economic sticks and carrots, as long as it serves US interests - namely control over energy supplies from this region for the forseeable future, a future measured via quarterly profit for the multinational corporations and their top shareholders. Regardless of human rights issues, or the violation thereof, anywhere in the world. So, to put it mildly, these short-sighted policies will continue to foster resentment and strife in the long run and they must be opposed, by all ordinary citizens on this planet, because they are bad for everyone involved. The financial elites of ALL nations would be well advised to heed one little sentence from a speech by Kennedy, although he was by no means a saint in any way: "Those who make peaceful changes impossible, make violent change inevitable..."
These words, in hindsight, should carry great weight, since it was Kennedy and his counterpart in the Soviet Union, who prevented a global nuclear war, through NEGOTIATIONS. Recent declassified documents have shown, that we were about 48 hours from a global nuclear war. Read the documents and take a long, deep breath...while you still can.

  • "Nearly every week," I believe is an exact quote from a journalist specializing in Pakistan and the surrounding region I saw on Democracy Now a couple of weeks ago, though he used it as I did, as a mild hyperbole.

Musharref is doing what he has always done, ruthlessly playing all the players against one another to stay in power. We tolerate this because he has always been a CIA asset - like Pinochet, Noriega, The Shah, Saddam Hussein, and whole host of other cuddly types.

  • We may have passed the last goood window for naval operations against Iran. Petreaus can drag his feet until after the election without getting Bush and Cheney worked up. If Obama wins, he probably knows that any military leaders who bent over for Bush are toast. Small hope, but it's all we have right now.

  • great blog, ella! very informative as usual. peace

  • so true, man! the top command is nothing more that politicians these days, not concerned with the mission as much as they are their own careers. peace.

  • Nowadays the high ranking generals and such are nothing more than rich boy politicians just like their puppet masters. I respect the hell out of our troops as most of you know..but people like BeTRAYUS?? No respect at all..scum just like his daddy Bush.

  • hi Ella, do you have the link to the de-classified documents?

  • Amazing the best reason anyone can think of to keep Petreus from heading up CENTCOM is he needs to finish the surge before moving on. Proof brown nosing remains a surefire way to get to the top.

Negroponte has been going to Pakistan on almost a weekly basis begging them not to unseat what's now clearly a military junta w/out a popular mandate.

Of course the Pakistanis are upset. We blow up their troops all the time in classified accidents.

Bush misrepresenting someone? Say it isn't so!

  • where is the document online? thanx
