@Rulinator: Yes, Ray Lloyd was starting his career around this time. He'd go on to compete in the Japanese shoot-style promotion UWFi and arrived in WCW as Glacier in 1996.

Sorry to nitpick, but it had to be at least 1989. Muta debuted in WCW in 1989, back when they were still in the old WTBS studio.
