Complementary to http://banjosessions.com/?p=30 this is Will the Circle Be Unbroken in the key of D, played on Irish tenor banjo retuned from GDae to open D tuning ADad.
Right hand is armed by banjo fingerpicks on thumb, index and middle finger for picking, and by ring fingernailpick for downstrumming/frailing. Four different styles are presented:
1) Frailing on low strings, however it is not just the core bum-ditty T-RI pattern as it is blended by kind of folk TIRI strum. Frailing tutorial is at http://banjosessions.com/?p=86
2) Frailing on high strings by pinch+frail pattern, so the thumb plays bass on low strings (root, - ,fifth, - of the chord). Look at http://archive.banjosessions.com/feb10/patek.html
3) Travis style picking - melody again on high strings, thumb plays bass on low strings (ideally it should be root, root, fifth, fifth to keep the alternation of root and fifth the same as in pattern 2. Look at http://banjosessions.com/?p=30
4) Three-finger-picking with melody played by thumb on low strings. Look at http://banjosessions.com/?p=60 for some bluegrass rolls.
Chords:
D = 0000
D7 = 0320 or 0023
G = 2020 or 5520
Bm = 2420 or 2424
A = 0202
