For my old interwebs mucker Peter Montgomery, I have been faffing around for months to try to film a miniature pyrotechnics shot for his latest film (hence the various test shots on my channel). At long last, and after agonies of arsing around with a faulty 16mm high-speed camera, he and I decided to draw a line under it and use the above test footage which was shot, as ever, on my trusty Casio EX-FH25 at 240fps.

As you can see, the timing of the charges was really off, though I have diagnosed why and can correct it in future. Also, there's the perennial problem with all-too-visible cracks and gaps in the pre-broken miniature, and I've still not devised a framework strong enough to allow assembly of the pre-broken structure but which can then be blown away by the charges going off. Finally, the perspective of the backdrop is way off as this was never intended to be the final footage so the camera had to squeeze in next to the (bulky) 16mm high-speed camera and so was considerably off the correct filming axis. Peter has only used it because the 16mm film turned out to be utter shite. He's done a fantastic job turning a very flawed shot into something really dramatic here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7gNoYJGCB70

  • I have been in the special effects field for well over sixteen years.

    Miniature FX will never die.

90% of films today still use miniatures for some shots.

It will live on for another 100 years.

    Peace.

  • Seeing this and seeing the final version was a jolly interesting exercise. Great work guys

  • it's a dying art form
