I was there. In the CAL Band. It was an amazing bit of chaos... I was on the field at the "other" end-zone, so I could not see all of what actually happened when it happened. But I certainly saw it enough times in the countless replays since then. The rest of the game was also quit exiting; the game was Joe Kapp's highlight as head coach. And it ruined senior Stanford QB John Elway's last college game.
It doesn't actually matter, since in 1982 there was a rule that if there was significant interference on the play (eg: the Stanfurd band) the penalty could have been as severe as awarding Cal a touchdown even if they didn't make it to the endzone. So the entire play is moot, the ref said in an interview he would have given the touchdown regardless! Go Bears!
