.....listen to the song through a pair of your best headphones. When you get to the bridge of the song at 2:30 crank the volume way up and listen.....its a great bridge; Bowie-esque

Symposium... Aristophanes dialogue. Lovely.

2:32 still gives me chills, after all these years...

This sort of sounds like he really loved parts of this song, and he's excited to sing it himself. Then there's other parts that just sound like he hates either the song or himself because he sounds very bored. It's strange, and I don't think I'm a fan of this cover.

What a disappointment. I love Rufus, but this song may be one of the best songs ever written, and this cover does nothing for it....

@hutch1979music You've done a lot of ASSuming in your comments. And the disrespect one was way over the top.

Great cover! I love his voice. I don't know why people are complaining about it not being "over the top" b/c the original was just as mellow. So stfu and enjoy the music :)

@hutch1979music Actually, I agree. John Cameron Mitchell delivers it with much more conviction. Rufus here feels like he's struggling to give a damn.

@hutch1979music Sorry! I pushed the wrong "reply" button.

@JyginsGreenBird - Thank you for your contribution, but it seems you've misunderstood the exchange; it was me who said the cover was lazy and disrespectful, only to then be told I was 'one of those people', whatever that sneering bullshit is supposed to mean, and THAT's the personal attack in question. I've made no insulting comments in response ('sneering bullshit' is both fair and non-personal, no?) and will not do so. Thank you for agreeing with my assessment of the song.

I thought I was going to love this, but... it's sort of bad, isn't it?

@hutch1979music There was no personal attack there. It's an observation: the song is a lazy cover. Therefore, this adaptation can be seen as disrespectful. That's pretty simple.

I was really looking forward to such a respected artist's cover of this, but this is lazy. The scansion especially sounds clumsy and not in an interesting way, as though he never saw the lyrics before attempting to sing it off a karaoke screen. This is disrespectful to the original, in my opinion, and not nearly good enough in its own right to justify that kind of disrespect..

@vanecaptures - What, one of those people who resorts to ad hominim attacks when they can't think of anything constructive to say? Yes, I suppose- oh no wait...

@hutch1979music how is it that an attack, much less an ad hominem? it's a fact. you're one of "those people" who think it's disrespectful to cover a song. which i obviously disagree with.
