I'm teaching Andretti to retrieve a dumbbell using clicker training. Prior to this video, I had done two training sessions with him. Those weren't filmed.

Session 1: My goal was to get him to tap the center of the dumbbell with his nose. We worked for about 2 minutes and he was reliably doing it by the end.

Session 2: My goal was to get him to interact with his mouth and the dumbbell in some way. Being a kissy boy, he decided to lick the dumbbell. :0) That was fine with me!

Session 3: I wanted to see if he would open his mouth at all and he did! This video is the entire session.

I'll film as much as I can of the next sessions. I'm not sure how long it will take but so far he's picking this up pretty quickly!

  • Elizabeth,

    What treats are you using?

    Thanks,

  • Just plain dog kibble! Nothing very romantic, I'm afraid. He is happy to learn things, it doesn't really matter what treats I use. We try to learn stuff using at least one meal per day. (i.e. he doesn't eat often from a bowl!!)

  • Ah. He scarfs them so fast I wondered if it were a soft food. I recall one IG who worked quite well for that gawdawful semi-moist dog food-type-product that looks like hamburger. Blech.

Excuse me one second. Someone is tugging at me.

quietly: What do you need Sweetie?

    more quietly: mmrrruff ruff uffrrrr?

quietly: It's like what I put my breakfast in, honey.

    more quietly: wuf.

Okay, I'm back. Tobiana just wanted to know what a bowl is. :-)

  • Nice job! He looks great. Dex is doing better at me walking behind him on the stay already. I'm able to do it almost 100% of the time - working on new locations and adding more distractions now. Just realized yesterday not only will *I* be walking around him, but there will likely be another handler that walks next to him as they finish the exercise!

  • great start! Cant wait to see the finished retrieve!

  • What a cutie! and he learns so fast :)
