At the country residence of the wealthy Gaudenzio Strappapuppole (Alessandro Corbelli), Florville (David Kuebler), the young son of a senator, confesses his love to Strappapuppole's ward Sofia (Amelia Felle) under the watchful eyes of the lady's maid Marianna (Janice Hall). Their happiness is clouded by the fact that Sofia has already been promised to another, a certain Signor Bruschino (father Alberto Rinaldi- son Vito Gobbi), whom neither she nor her guardian have ever met. Florville hits on the idea of pretending to be Bruschino, and the appearance of the innkeeper Filiberto (Carlos Feller) with a letter from the real Bruschino perfectly fits into his plan. Filiberto has detained Bruschino, a man with a reputation for gambling and philandering, in his attic. Instead of paying Gaudenzio and Sofia the expected courtesy call, Bruschino has run up a debt of 400 francs at the inn, and the letter is to beg his father to help him out of trouble. With a small bribe to the tune of half the sum owed, Florville buys both the innkeeper's silence and the letter, determined to present himself to Gaudenzio as Bruschino.
